How does a WhatsApp (wa.me) link work?
A wa.me link opens a WhatsApp chat with your number when someone taps it. The WhatsApp help center calls it click to chat: it lets a person start a chat without having your number saved in their address book, as long as they have an active WhatsApp account, and it works on both the phone and WhatsApp Web.
The format is https://wa.me/number, where the number is the full phone number in international format, with no zeroes, brackets or dashes. To open the chat with text already typed, add ?text= and the URL-encoded message, for example ?text=Hello%20I%20would%20like%20a%20quote. The generator does the encoding for you: spaces, accents, punctuation and line breaks.
There is also a message-only link, https://wa.me/?text=…, with no number. Whoever taps it picks which contact to send it to, so it suits share buttons rather than receiving customers. That is why this tool always includes your number.
How to write the number for each country
WhatsApp's rule is the same everywhere: the country code followed by the full number, digits only. If you type the number with spaces, dashes, brackets or leading zeroes, the generator strips them. If you type it with + or 00 in front, it takes it as a full international number and ignores the country in the selector.
| Country | Code | How the link starts | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colombia | 57 | wa.me/57… | Country code and full number, no leading zeroes or +. |
| Mexico | 52 | wa.me/521… | WhatsApp asks for a 1 after 52. |
| Peru | 51 | wa.me/51… | Country code and full number, no leading zeroes or +. |
| Chile | 56 | wa.me/56… | Country code and full number, no leading zeroes or +. |
| Argentina | 54 | wa.me/549… | WhatsApp asks for a 9 between 54 and the area code, without the 15, for 13 digits in total. |
The Argentina 9 and the Mexico 1 come from WhatsApp's article on adding an international phone number, which is about saving contacts. The generator uses that same form when it builds the link. Before you publish yours, try the Open in WhatsApp button and confirm it opens the right chat.
Where can you use your WhatsApp link?
A WhatsApp link works anywhere you can paste a URL or print a code.
- Instagram bio: paste the link in your profile's link field so visitors reach WhatsApp in one tap.
- Google Business Profile: use it in the fields where Google lets you add a link, so people who find you on Maps or in search can message you directly.
- QR code on tables, windows, packaging and flyers: download the QR from the tool and place it where the customer is already looking. It suits restaurants, physical shops and deliveries.
- Ads: use the link as the destination so the click opens the chat instead of a form.
- Website, email signature and digital cards: a text link or a button. WhatsApp also offers an official Chat on WhatsApp button, English only for now, with sample HTML in the click to chat article.
One trick that keeps work tidy: make a different link per channel, each with a message that says where it comes from, such as "Hi, I am writing from Instagram" or "Hi, I saw your ad". When the conversation arrives you know which channel worked, and whoever answers starts with context.
A good pre-filled message is short, specific and sounds like your business. Avoid long texts: the customer can edit them before sending, and a short message also makes a simpler QR that is easier to scan.
Limits of a wa.me link and what to do when your team grows
A wa.me link only opens a chat: it does not send messages for you, does not measure how many clicks it gets and does not split conversations between people. Everything that arrives lands in the WhatsApp of the number in the link. With one or two people and a few chats a day, that is enough.
The limit shows up when more people answer the same number. The WhatsApp Business app lets you link up to four devices to one phone, but it has no chat assignment: two teammates can reply to the same customer, or each assumes the other has it. It also has no AI agent that covers nights and weekends.
That is where HellouOne comes in, a shared inbox for that same number. You keep your number, so your customers keep writing to the same contact, your team answers from the browser with their own login and assignment rules give every new conversation an owner. A WhatsApp AI agent can answer first, at any hour and with your business information, and hand the chat to a person when needed. To see how the team is organized, read the WhatsApp team inbox guide. The free trial lasts 7 days and asks for no card.
